Hatsudoki Seizo Co. Ltd was founded in 1907, before being renamed in 1951 to Daihatsu Motor Co. Ltd. The company largely focused on steam engines until 1930, then this changed over to diesel engines and in the 1960’s their focus changed to automobiles. Toyota became a major shareholder in the company in 1967 and in 2016 Daihatsu became wholly owned by Toyota.
